The importance of the right pump the pump is one of the most important equipment purchases you will make for your water garden. It is the heart of the pond, circulating water to the filter and keeping the ecosystem healthy. Because it runs constantly, it must be both dependable and energy efficient.
POND WITH FOUNTAIN:
CHOOSE DESIRED HEAD HEIGHT OF FOUNTAIN (Distance between top of fountain and surface of pond). Then determine flow rate available from performance chart.
POND WITH WATERFALL:
CHOOSE HEAD HEIGHT (Distance between top of waterfall and surface of pond). Add one foot of head height for every ten feet of connection hose required. Then determine flow rate available from performance chart. NOTE: Waterfall requires 75 – 100 gallons/hour flow rate for every inch of width.
POND WITH WATERFALL AND FOUNTAIN:
COMBINE HEAD HEIGHT FOR FOUNTAIN PLUS WATERFALL. Add one foot of head height for every ten feet of connecting hose, then determine flow rate available form performance chart.
SPITTER FEATURE: Add one foot of head height for every ten feet of hose.
A LARGER PUMP PROVIDES THE FLEXIBILITY TO ADD MORE FEATURES LATER
Waterfalls – factors to consider: the height of the waterfall above the pump, the horizontal distance from the pump to the top of waterfall, or discharge point. (10″ horizontal = 1″ of height of “head”), the width of the waterfall and effect desired.
A “Standard” waterfall – with a 1/8″ to 1/4″ film of water 12” wide requires 500 – 800 gph of flow at the top of the waterfall.
A “Rushing” waterfall – with a 1/2″ to 3/4″ film of water 12″ wide requires 700 – 1400 gph of flow at the top of the waterfall.
length x width x depth x 7.5 = pond capacity
Example: For a pond 15″ x 10″ x 1.5″ deep
15 x 10 x 1.5 x 7.5 = 1700 gallons U.S.
Round Pools – 0.785 x ( Top Diameter x Bottom Diameter x Height ) x 7.5
If computed in inches, divide the total by 231 or If computed in feet, multiply the total by 7.5.
Example: 1700 gallon pond divided by 2 = 850 gph pump
Pond Filters and Filtration
Most pumps in fact come with some sort of filter on them already.
These can consist of plastic cages or foam blocks sometimes inside small cages.
These filters may require daily cleaning
These filters are simply to protect your pump from solids that could damage them.
Determining Filter for Your Pond – Most manufacturers indicate on their filters what pond volume or fish load they support. Add these factors to your pond to determine proper size filter.
Average pond depth less than 2.6″ – add 25% volume
Pond located in full sun – add 25% volume

Mechanical filtration – particles are trapped in some type of media for removal during cleaning.
Biological filtration – beneficial bacteria feed on impurities in the water, breaking down fish waste and other organic matter.
Biological filters have a specific flow rate according to manufacturer and size. Slow flow rate allow the aerobic bacteria more exposure to the water to break down impurities. A fast flow may actually dislodge the bacteria from the filter. do not turn off the biofilter pump for more than 1/2 1 hour, as the bacteria will die and emit toxins back into the pond. It will also take several weeks for the bacterial population to build up in the biofilter. Therefore, bacteria (microbe-lift) are added at start up.
Suited for small to medium ponds or prefilters for ponds utilizing an external filter.
Placing the filter outside of the pond, where it can be partially buried, makes it even easier to clean. The down-flow water path collects more debris than submersible filters while producing a more oxygen enriched environment for biological filtration.
Specially designed for fish keeping enthusiasts with large ponds and many fish, larger “black box” filters contain huge amounts of bacteria and efficiently strain out all solids. The Eco range of filters come with or without the UVC for ponds of up to 2000 gallons. The Green Machine range can be above ground up to 6000 gallons, while the gravity fed versions for up to 5000 gallons are buried in ground.
The greatest benefit of using a system is that it actually does the routine maintenance for you!
The skimmer holding the pump, continuously sweeps the surface clean depositing unsightly debris in a catch bag for easy removal. Additionally, as the water is pumped through the Falls unit, microscopic bacteria go to work scrubbing the pond clean of green water. by combining both mechanical and biological filtration, the system does the maintenance for you, reducing your work and increasing your enjoyment.
The movement of water across the roots of plants in a natural filter encourages increased consumption of nutrients thereby reducing the amount of nutrients available for pea soup algae to thrive.
The natural filter area need only be 10% of the pond surface area. For best results, 1/2 of the ponds water volume should circulate through out the natural filter hourly. Yellow water iris, water mint, water clearly and water hyacinth have proven to be highly effective plants for use in natural filters.

The versatile new filters can be used above-ground, or hidden in-ground. Because it is pressurized, water can be pumped up from the filter to the top of a waterfall. simple, clean….and out of sight!
When to clean these filters – Mechanical filters should only be cleaned when they impede water flow. Biological filters should only be cleaned at opening and closing (spring/fall). We never want to wash away our BUDDIES (BENEFICIAL BACTERIA). “A clean filter was a waste of money.”
